Second quarter costly for Indians

February 15, 2014

Save for a 20-8 run by Huckabay in the second quarter, the Lipan Indians controlled much of the game against Huckabay, the state’s No. 9 team Wednesday in Huckabay.

Lipan outscored Huckabay in three of the four quarters, but still lost the game 59-54.

“It was a very competitive game from start to finish,” said Lipan coach Cody Chandler. “I could not be more proud of the way this group of kids battled, not only in this game but throughout district.

“Looking forward to the playoffs next week, and what they may hold for our team.”

Lipan (13-15) opens the playoffs Monday against Walnut Springs in Tolar, 6:30 p.m. tipoff. The Indians are the third-place team in 17-A behind Huckabay (21-6) and Lingleville (24-3, No. 10 in state). The Hornets (14-8) were second in 18-A.

The Indians were led Wednesday by Joel Rice and Derrick Cook with 14 points each, while Lance Ferguson added 13. Ferguson also had nine rebounds.

The ultimate difference in the game was at the free throw line. Lipan was 10-for-18 and Huckabay was 16-for-28.
