The Hood County News Junior Golf Tournament series continues Wednesday at Hidden Oaks Golf Course.
And for the first time in the series’ history, two tournaments will be held in same month. In additon to Wednesday’s event, the third tourney in the series will be held three weeks later on July 31.
After that, the top eight boys and top eight girls in points standings in the 15-18 age groups will return Aug. 14-15 for a match-play tournament to determine the overall Hood County Junior Golf champion. The other age groups and those not in the top eight of 15-18 will compete in a medal-play event Aug. 14.
Ty Wright, winner of the first tournament in June, leads the points standings with eight. Another victory and he would all but secure his place in the August event.
“Ty is out there all the time working on his game – all the time,” said tournament director Josh Wilkes.
Should Wright not win, or should he skip playing in this event, it would tighten the field. Players accumulate points based on their order of finish, 1-8, with first receiving eight points, second seven, all the way down to one point for eighth place.
Wilkes said the junior clinics that are held each Wednesday are filling up. He anticipates several from Wednesday’s clinic will stay to play when the tournament tees off at 11:30 a.m.
“Some kids who had said they weren’t ready for a tournament saw some of the scores from the last one and said ‘Maybe I am ready,’” said Wilkes.
“They realize it’s a non-intimidating tournament – not that we don’t have good players, we do, but because the scores have a big range. They understand they don’t have to be great at golf yet to have a great time.”
The next two tournaments are July 10 and 31.
