SEALS have best state meet in team history

July 31, 2013

Janet Steenberge chuckled and recalled an incident involving some of her swimmers at the recent Texas Amateur Athletic Federation (TAAF) Region IV Meet.

Some youths were playing around and one teasingly said to one of her swimmers, “You guys think you’re something because you’re SEALS.”

Well, it would seem they are based on the results from those regionals and this past weekend’s showing at the TAAF Games of Texas in Corpus Christi.

The SEALS sent 58 swimmers to state, the most in club history. They captured 27 medals at state, also the most in the history of the team.

“Oh my gosh, it was so much fun,” said an elated Steenberge following the meet.

“It was amazing.”

As a team, the SEALS finished seventh out of 76 squads participating. It was – you guessed it – the best showing ever for the club.

Trophy Club, the only team to top the SEALS in their four regular-season meets (twice), won the state team title.

“Now I feel so much better about them beating us at regionals,” Steenberge said with a laugh.

SEALS male swimmers brought home 14 medals, including eight gold, three silver and three bronze. They were led by Keith Rucker, who won four gold medals and set four state records in the process.

Rucker, swimming in the Men 60-64 division, set records in the 100-yard freestyle (1:12.57), 50 breaststroke (47.17), 50 freestyle (32.37), and 200 freestyle (2:52.41).

“Isn’t he awesome?” Steenberge said. “And how about what Vicki did?”

Steenberge was referring to Vicki Hamrick, who set two state records in the Women 55-59 division by winning the 50 breaststroke (43.99) and 50 freestyle (34.04).

SEALS female swimmers captured a dozen medals, including five gold, four silver and three bronze.

Jackie Castle, in the Women 30-34 division, led all swimmers with five individual medals, two gold, two silver and bronze. Russell Brown, in the Men 40-44 bracket, won four medals, including three gold and a silver. Nick Vollmer, the Men 25-29 category, also won four, a gold, a silver and two bronze.

In addition, Castle and Vollmer joined Elise Decker and Brad Kade to win a bronze medal on the 18-Over Mixed 200 medley relay. It was one of two medal-winning relays for the SEALS, the other being a bronze to the 6-Under Girls 100 freestyle relay of Lila Heiner, Braylee Martin, Ella Segovia and Jessica Van Buren).

“Think about it, a medal at state for that age,” said Steenberge of the 6-Under quartet. “That is a big thing. Some people work years and don’t medal at state.”

FOUR TO NATIONALS

Four members of the SEALS are now making the trek to Hershey, Penn. for the State Games of American, sponsored by USA Swimming.

The group includes Matthew Walters (9-10 boys), Andrew Walters (11-12 boys), David Fauber (11-12 boys), and Avery Buchanan (11-12 girls).

The meet is Thursday and Friday.

For the Walters brothers, this is their second time to compete in the prestigious national meet. They competed in 2011 in San Diego, with Matthew winning a bronze medal in the 7-8 age group.
