The Tolar Rattlers exhibited strength in shellacking Mildred a couple weeks ago, and received an award appropriately named for their performance.
The Rattlers were the recent recipients of the Army Strong Award presented by Texasfootball.com/U.S. Army.
Tolar was given the award following the Rattlers’ 49-0 win at Mildred on Oct. 18. It was the first time Mildred had been shut out since 2009.
The Rattlers amassed over 500 yards in the victory, handing the defending 2A Division II state finalist its first district loss since 2010.
“That is a great honor,” said Franklin. “I’m so proud of our team.”
The award also makes the Rattlers eligible to be named Team of the Year.
NO PASSING FANCY
When opposing quarterbacks go to the air, they are taking a bit of a risk against the Rattlers.
Tolar entered last night with 10 interceptions by six different players. Leading the list are Blake Watson with four and Garrett Winston with two.
A LITTLE BIT MORE
When it comes to defense, the Rattlers have spread the tackles around this season, led by Hunter Ryan with 62.
But two players in particular have made a habit out of not just tackling the runner, but doing so behind the line of scrimmage.
Rodie Brister has 32 tackles, including a team-high 10 for a loss. Kaleb Crawford’s 22 tackles include nine for a loss.
DOING IT ALL
Talk about versatility, that’s Winston. His list of accomplishments this season is lengthy.
Along with his two interceptions, he’s returned 13 punts for 260 yards, including a long of 60. He has seven kickoff returns for 140 yards.
He’s punted twice for an average of 35.5 yards. He has 1,828 yards in kickoffs, including five touchbacks.
He’s 26-for-29 kicking extra points and has scored a pair of two-point conversions. He also has a 22-yard field goal, giving him a total of 63 points.
“And the thing that doesn’t show is he’s the guy we’ve got locked up on the other team’s best receiver,” said Franklin.
Between them, Cory Solomon, Winston and Corbin Wood have accounted for 61 percent of the Rattlers’ scoring this season.
Solomon leads with 64 points, followed by Winston (63) and Wood (60). As a team, Tolar has scored 305.
