Tolar boys basketball coach Kent Caruthers isn’t just thinking playoffs. He also has an eye on making a run at a District 10-2A basketball title.
The Rattlers held Godley scoreless in overtime Friday for a 56-53 triumph at home that closed out the first half of play and moved Tolar to 4-2 in district, 13-7 overall. The top three teams from each district qualify for the playoffs.
Caruthers said he told his players before the game that the Godley matchup was their most important of season so far. The Rattlers had entered the game tied for Godley in third place in the district.
“From the start of the game the kids came out more intense than we have in the past. Now we’re sitting in third place with Whitney (last night on road) and Grandview (Feb. 1 at home) ahead of us,” Caruthers said. “ We’re still in the hunt for a district championship, too. If we take care business in the second half, we still have a chance.”
Zack Hasegawa led Tolar with 18 points including nine in the opening quarter, and in rebounding, with 11. Jacob Phillips added 12 points and Corbin Wood scored 11. Ty Johnston had a team-high five assists for Tolar.
Tolar shot 23-of-51 from the field overall, and made six of 17 free throws.
The only points scored in the overtime period were three free throws by Tolar.
“They had a lot of shot attempts. They just didn’t fall,” Caruthers said of the shutout in overtime. “It was good defense on both sides. We didn’t give up any second-chance opportunities. They had the ball with three seconds left with a chance to tie it up throwing it inbounds and we got a steal (by Hasegawa) and that finished out the game.
“We played well. Godley is a very disciplined team. We let them get some easy baskets early. It stayed a five- or six-point game and they caught back up right at the end.”
