The first of two crucial District 6-2A Division II games for the Tolar football team didn’t go the way the Rattlers had hoped.
Unbeaten Scurry-Rosser got 228 yards passing from sophomore quarterback Paten Snell in a 41-14 victory over Tolar Friday night at Rattler Stadium.
The Wildcats (6-0, 3-0) scored on each of their first six possessions, and didn’t punt until early in the third quarter.
The setback was the first district loss for the Rattlers (4-2, 2-1), who will be on the road this Friday (7:30 p.m.) to take on preseason favorite and 2012 state runner-up Mildred (5-1, 3-0).
Friday’s game was a radical turnaround from last year’s game between the two teams, which was played in Scurry. The Rattlers dominated that game and won by an almost identical score over the Wildcats, 42-14.
This time, Tolar was limited to 3.6 yards per carry rushing, and just 35 yards passing from starting quarterback Corbin Wood and reserve Dakota Endsley combined.
Snell threw for two touchdowns and ran for two more, and four of his teammates scored TDs. Scurry-Rosser running back Rodney Sample led all rushers with 121 yards on eight carries. It was his 30-yard TD run with 5:07 left in the second quarter that capped the scoring for the Wildcats.
“They’re good – no doubt about it,” Tolar head coach Mike Franklin said. “They’re probably better than we thought they were. Penalties on our first two drives made a major difference – not just scoring-wise, but emotionally and everything else.
“They had a quick start. If we score on our chances in the first quarter, it’s 14-10 or 14-14 and then that second quarter is a completely different game.”
The Wildcats went on top 20-0 early in the second quarter, and Franklin said, “We kind of went into panic mode.”
The Wildcats owned a 41-0 lead at halftime, and Franklin said he told his players that their second-half performance would be a matter of pride.
“There wasn’t any quit in them,” Franklin said of his Rattlers.
Tolar’s first scoring drive began late in the third quarter after the Rattlers forced one of only three punts the Wildcats had on the night. The Rattlers took possession at the Scurry-Rosser 40-yard line and six plays later Endsley carried the final 2 yards.
The Wildcats were forced to punt again on their next possession, and Garrett Winston returned it 61 yards for a Tolar TD.
“Tolar’s a good team,” said third-year Scurry-Rosser head coach Jason Bachtel. “I think they have some injury bugs still catching up with them.”
Franklin said, “We’ve still got some lingering stuff (injuries), but I don’t think that was the problem tonight.”
Bachtel pinpointed one key element from his point of view.
“I thought our speed was a key, and that our kids were physical,” said Bachtel, who noted that this marks the first time Scurry-Rosser has been 6-0 since about 1993.
LOOKING TO MILDRED
The Eagles have scored an average of 57 points in district contests, including last week’s 70-14 win over Millsap.
“It’s going to be another big test,” Franklin said. “We’ve got to regroup and get ready to play a football game. They’re going to feature that running back (Draylon Sterling). He’s their main threat, and well he should be.”
The Eagles no longer have Iowa recruit Nick Shimonek at quarterback, but they don’t seem to have missed a beat. Sterling gained almost 2,000 yards rushing and scored 34 touchddowns last year. He also had 127 tackles and five interceptions from his spot in the defensive secondary.
