Rattlers set up showdown

October 17, 2012

SCURRY – Tolar picked up the pace in the second half on the road Friday night, scoring four touchdowns after intermission for a 42-14 triumph over Scurry-Rosser as the Rattlers won their fifth consecutive football game.

Tolar has breezed through its first three District 6-2A, Division II, football games, and the Rattlers have a chance to establish themselves all alone at the top of the standings.

On Friday night, Tolar (5-1) improved to 3-0 in district as running back Cory Solomon rushed for 209 yards on 31 carries, with three touchdowns. Solomon is within 77 yards of reaching 1,000 yards for the second straight year.

This Friday, the Rattlers will play host to preseason favorite Corsicana Mildred (5-1, 3-0), which trounced Millsap 77-0 this past week.

Tolar starting quarterback Corbin Wood, who ran 11 yards for a TD and threw a 31-yard scoring pass to Grant Winston that put the Rattlers on top 28-7 late in the third quarter, said the team wore down the Wildcats.

“That’s the best thing about this team,” Wood said. “The line and the receivers had great games, and that made me look good – and Cory had a stellar night again.”

Wood said the Rattlers are looking forward to Mildred.

“Winning district is a big thing for us,” Wood said. “Football is a momentum game, and we have momentum and we’re not gonna let down.”

Zack Hasegawa had a big game, intercepting two passes, scoring on a 2-point conversion – and almost scoring a TD.

Hasegawa’s first pickoff came at the 1:38 mark in the first quarter, and he returned it 27 yards to the Scurry-Rosser 28-yard line. Four plays later, Wood’s TD was the first score of the night, as time expired in the opening quarter.

Tolar’s defense, which has posted two shutouts this season, stopped the Wildcats on fourth-and-1 to turn the ball over on downs at the 8:08 mark in the third quarter. Five snaps later, Justin Brown’s 11-yard TD run lifted the Rattlers to a 20-7 edge.

Landon Morris intercepted a Wildcat pass and returned it 49 yards, to the Scurry-Rosser 6-yard line. Solomon’s 6-yard TD run followed on the next play, with Morris flipping to Hasegawa on the 2-point conversion for a 36-14 Tolar lead.

Tolar’s Garrett Winston then recovered an onside kick, setting up the Rattlers at the Wildcats’ 44-yard line with 5:52 left in the game. Solomon then scored on first-and-10 from the Scurry-Rosser 18 for the final TD, with Wood connecting with B.J. Dollins on a 2-point conversion.

The Rattlers won despite turning the ball over three times, and being flagged 12 times for 119 yards in penalties.

“Our kids battled through adversity and kept playing, and we kept our cool and played football, and the better team won,” Tolar head coach Mike Franklin said. “I was real proud of our kids playing hard.”

Franklin said he gave his players a challenge at halftime to hang in physically on a warm and humid night, after the Rattlers could manage only a 14-7 lead through two quarters.

“I told them I needed warriors to come out and play the next 24 minutes, and not tell me you can’t go out and play,” Franklin said. “They came out and answered the bell. This was a big ballgame – a big win. We’re 3-0. That’s where we want to be.”
