Ty Johnston scored 20 points and Corbin Wood secured 19 rebounds to help the Tolar Rattlers defeat Rio Vista 62-51 in a physical battle on the road Tuesday night to hold on to third place in District 10-2A.
A win last night at home would have moved Tolar into a tie with Grandview for second place.
In addition to Johnston’s scoring, which included 9-of-9 free throw shooting, Zack Hasegawa added 11 points.
Caruthers reported that one of his players, Riley Osterman, suffered a possible broken nose while teammate Landon Morris sustained a gash on the top of his head. Caruthers said Morris was looking into the possibility of either getting it glued or having stitches.
Two players on each team fouled out.
“It was a very phsyical game,” Caruthers said. “It was a tough game all the way thorugh.”
Caruthers said the Rattlers were leading by 13 or 14 points in the fourth quarter when Rio Vista’s strategy turned to fouling. The Rattlers went only 1-for-8 at the foul line during that stretch and Rio Vista climbed to within six points before Tolar’s field goal attempts and free throws began to fall.
“They were very fast and quick. They get after it,” Caruthers said of Rio Vista. “Our kids played hard.”
