Rattlers dominate in district opener

October 3, 2012

TOLAR – The Tolar football team’s momentum became an avalanche that buried Dallas Life Oak Cliff 61-12 as Corbin Wood threw for three touchdowns and ran for another Friday night at Rattler Stadium.

The District 6-2A, Div. II opener for both teams was the third straight win for the Rattlers (3-1), who will travel to Millsap Friday for their first road game in almost a month. Tolar had two home games sandwiched around its open date.

Tolar’s defense, which shut out De Leon 39-0 in the Rattlers’ last game on Sept. 14, held Dallas Life (0-4) to only 2 net yards rushing on 29 carries for another all-around domination.

“Our kids did a real good job of coming out and executing,” Tolar head coach Mike Franklin said. “They did what we practiced. Corbin had a great game.

“We made a lot of nothing plays and turned them into something. We had a good game all around.”

Franklin said his squad’s battle cry this year is “Turkey swag” – which means the Rattlers are aiming go deep into the playoffs and “to have Thanksgiving dinner in that weight room.”

Wood, the starting quarterback, was on target all night. He completed 11 of his 12 passes for 213 yards and recorded 257 yards in total offense, including a 2-yard TD run that capped the scoring. He threw for scores of 32 and 26 yards to Zack Hasegawa, plus an 8-yard TD toss to Garrett Winston.

Tolar’s Cory Solomon scored from 7 and 22 yards out while rushing for a game-high 135 yards on 17 carries.

Landon Morris was in on two TDs for the Rattlers, running for a 20-yarder and tossing a 15-yard score to Justin Brown, who also returned an interception 40 yards for a TD.

“It’s just our work ethic, and we have great coaches,” Hasegawa said, noting that the Rattlers are benefiting from hard work in the weight room. “I think with these three wins in a row, our momentum is getting better each week.”

The Rattlers struck quickly, after a partially blocked punt set up Tolar at the Lions’ 34-yard line at the 11:11 mark in the opening quarter. Tolar added two TDs in the final 2:41 of the quarter and the Lions were facing a 26-0 deficit.

An interception by B.J. Dollins led to Tolar’s only second-quarter score. Wood’s 8-yard TD flip to Garrett Winston was perfectly timed as the Rattlers entered halftime with a 33-0 advantage.

Tolar again closed out the next quarter with rapid-fire scoring, this time with Morris connecting with Brown – who then returned his interception for a score on the Lions’ second play following the kickoff. Tolar suddenly was on top 55-12 going into the final quarter.

Hasegawa returned a Lion punt 28 yards to set up Tolar’s final score. After Solomon galloped 33 yards on first down, three snaps later Wood recorded his rushing TD to provide the final 49-point margin.

Franklin said he had been concerned his players might get a little out of their routine because of the open week, but saw little to complain about Friday.

“We blew one coverage. Other than that, their first three or four series we shut them down,” Franklin said, noting that the Lions were a playoff team last year in Class 2A, Div. I. “We’re moving the sticks and hitting big plays when we need to. The defense is just playing outstanding.”
