The Tolar boys basketball squad chalked up a pair of wins in strong outings, bouncing back from their district-opening loss to Whitney.
After thumping Maypearl 72-43 Thursday, the Rattlers (11-6, 2-1 in 10-2A) downed Rio Vista 67-47 Saturday.
Zack Hasegawa led Tolar with 16 points against Rio Vista, while teammates Jacob Phillips and Ty Johnston added 13 apiece.
Caruthers said it was a fast-paced game, with Rio Vista using a full-court defense.
“It was a good, hard, physical game,” Caruthers said. “We started turning the ball over a little bit in the first half, but we settled down in the second half and finished strong.”
Caruthers said the Rattlers are still down a few men, so Dakota Endsley and Hunter Ryan were brought up from the junior varsity before the Breckenridge tournament.
Justin Brown, who had been trying to play with a torn ACL, opted to have surgery. Tyler Pruitt was back for the first game since turning an ankle before Christmas, and was “about 70 percent,” Caruthers said. Riley Osterman and Gideon Sanders are still out with injuries. Sanders may be out six to eight weeks with a fractured vertabra. Osterman may return in two to three weeks.
Tolar 72, Maypearl 43
In the blowout of Maypearl, Phillips paced Tolar’s offense with 15 points. Three others scored in double figures, with Ryan scoring 12, and Hasegawa and Johnston adding 10.
Hasegawa recorded six steals. Landon Morris, T.J. Foster and Phillips all had six rebounds.
“We started out a little slow,” Tolar coach Kent Caruthers said. “We came out in the second half a little flat. I told ‘em back off a little bit, and we let them outscore us in the third quarter. We only had nine turnovers; we took pretty good care of the ball.”
