The Southwest Raiders took sole possession of first place in District 7-4A baseball Tuesday with an 8-2 victory over visiting Granbury.
The Pirates (9-7 overall) fell for the first time in district, slipping to 3-1 in the league. Southwest (8-6 overall) improved to 4-0 in district.
“It was not a good outing. Way too many walks and we were awful at the plate,” said Granbury coach Brad Hart.
“They (Southwest) played good and had good approaches at the plate, and their lefty threw strikes.”
The trio of Granbury pitchers delivered six walks and managed to strike out just three batters.
The Pirates had outscored their first three district opponents by a 31-5 margin, including posting a pair of shutouts. However, they never got their offense untracked against the Blue Raiders, failing to score until the fifth inning.
By that time, Southwest was already well in command with an 8-0 cushion.
Still, six different Pirates got a base hit, led by Landon Gray, who was 2-for-2 with a walk and RBI.
The Pirates were back home last night to face Trimble Tech.
