Pirates top field in own tourney

October 12, 2013

The Granbury Pirates defended their home turf – make that turfs – as they won the Brazos Classic golf tournament earlier this week.

The Pirates Purple Team shot a two-round total of 621, opening with a 310 at deCordova Bend and following with a 321 at Pecan Plantation. It was 14 strokes ahead of runner-up Mansfield Legacy and 16 ahead of third-place Arlington Heights, which shares District 7-4A with the Pirates.

Both rounds were played on the same day.

Granbury Gold shot 691 for fifth, Granbury Black posted a 793 for seventh, and Granbury White shot 816 for eighth.

Zach Wall of the Pirates Purple finished second among medalists, shooting 153 (70-83) . Zac Campbell of Arlington Heights was top medalist with a 144 (68-76).

“We did a great job and I’m proud of the boys for competing hard,” said Granbury coach Steve Ward. “The guys were tired when it was over. I was pleased with their strength and toughness.

“We had 24 Granbury golfers playing in this event. We had tremendous support from our boosters and parental support. Thanks to both courses for letting us play, and the many volunteers.”
