The repeat of last season’s tournament final was a repeat of the same result, right down to the score being almost identical.

Unlike then, however, this time it was Nolan Catholic who grabbed an early lead. And instead of coming from behind like last season, this time the Vikings held off the Pirates for a 54-48 victory Thursday at the James Wann Sports Center.

Also this time, the matchup was the second round of pool play. It was the first game of the tourney for Nolan (3-6), while the Pirates (4-6) had earlier disposed of North Dallas 59-55.

“That game this morning took a lot out of us. It was a hard win,” said Pirate coach David Breazeale, also noting that his team had played three games in 27 hours.

Nolan jumped out to a 25-6 lead midway through the second quarter behind five 3-point baskets. Clay Brawner opened the third with a 3 to pull the Pirates to within 25-17, but the Vikings came back with eight unanswered points,

The Pirates did not get within single digits again until 32 seconds were left in the game.

“When you play 30 games, you’r going to have a clunker, but I told the guys, ‘You fought back,’” said Breazeale.

“It was a PE class for the first 13 minutes.”

Each time it appeared the Pirates were ready to make a run late in the third and through most of the fourth, Nolan would counter with clutch baskets and free throws.

North Dallas (6-3) led 29-25 at the half on the strength of outside shooting. But Granbury used a 17-9 third-quarter run to take the lead and finished with an 8-3 run.

“What we’d heard about North Dallas was watch for their bigs, then they hit five 3s in the first quarter,” said Breazeale.

“I had to go to a junk defense.”
