Pirates slip by Midlothian with big finish

The Granbury Pirates rallied for an exciting tennis victory against Midlothian, thanks largely to the heroics of Keelyn Taylor.

Taylor rallied from 6-0 down in the super tiebreaker against Midlothian’s Hannah Nunns to lift the Pirates to a 10-9 victory Monday.

“Midlothian was stunned,” said Granbury coach Jeff Bramlett.

“Very exciting. Very proud of our kids. They overcame a very adverse situation.”

Taylor won her first set 6-3, but dropped the second 7-5. Then, just when it appeared Nunns was in control, Taylor began her comeback.

“It was a great win against one of the better 5A teams in the area,” said Bramlett.”

Taylor had an even more exciting doubles match as she and Alex Jenny joined to win 5-7, 7-6, 11-9 over Julia DeLoach and Savannah Payne.

Granbury (2-2) led 5-2 after the doubles were completed, but struggled in singles. Midlothian won four of six in boys singles and split the six girls singles matches.

Granbury’s top two girls, Kate Bramlett and Elizabeth Morton, swept their matches. Bramlett won 6-1, 6-0 in singles, while Morton won 6-4, 6-3. Then, Bramlett and Morton teamed in doubles for a 6-4, 7-5 win.

Joel Rodgers also won both of his matches, 6-3, 3-6, 10-6 in singles, and pairing with Noah Smith in doubles for a 7-5, 6-1 victory.
