The Granbury Pirates were going to get their most important victory of the baseball season even if they had to work all night.
Which they almost did.
The Pirates needed 11 innings, but they finally defeated Fort Worth Southwest 8-6 at Tidwell Field Friday.
Tristan Fallin’s two-run walk-off home run ended the game after the teams had spent previous innings taking a lead and giving it away.
Landon Gray led off the 11th with a single, followed by Fallin’s monster home run that easily cleared the fence for his third round-tripper of the season.
With the victory, the Pirates (13-11 overall) improved to 7-4 in District 7-4A. They took sole possession of third place behind Aledo (10-1) and Fort Worth Arlington Heights (9-2).
Granbury plays at Aledo Friday and hosts Heights April 26 to end the regular season. The Pirates lost 7-4 to the Bearcats in the first meeting after holding a 4-2 lead in the top of the seventh. They fell 2-1 at Heights.
Daniel Arnett had a giant night at the plate, blasting his district-leading third and fourth home runs of the season, both solo shots. He also doubled, narrowly missing another homer when it bounced off the top of the fence.
One of Arnett’s home runs hit halfway up the foul pole in left field.
“They were not cheesy home runs. They were giant shots,” said Granbury coach Brad Hart of Arnett and Fallin.
Arnett’s second home run tied the game in the bottom of the 10th after Southwest had taken a 6-5 lead.
“This was huge,” Hart said of the victory, which avenged an 8-2 loss in Fort Worth. “Halfway through I was thinking this is our season.”
