Pirates need win to ensure third place

April 24, 2013

The second half of District 7-4A baseball is looking familiar to the first half for the Granbury Pirates.

But they can change that Friday with a win at home over Fort Worth Arlington Heights.

The Pirates (14-13 overall) fell to 8-5 in district with a 4-2 loss at Aledo Friday, also giving the Bearcats (23-5, 12-1) the top seed from the district as the playoffs approach.

The Pirates can do no better than third place in district, which is where they currently sit. They would hold onto that position, however, if they could defeat Heights, which has locked up second place in the league.

The Pirates wrapped up the first half of district by blowing a two-run lead against Aledo and losing 4-2 at home, followed by a narrow 2-1 loss at Heights, along with an 11-0 loss at Weatherford.

Friday’s loss at Aledo once again saw Granbury let a two-run lead slip away. They followed with a 13-1 loss at Weatherford.

“Just like last year, win and in good shape. Lose, you still have a chance to win and go as third,” said Granbury coach Brad Hart. “I’m glad we have a few days off to recover from this weekend.”

If the Pirates hang onto third, they would likely face Waco University in bidistrict. A loss would probably send them against defending state champion Cleburne to open the postseason.
