Pirates lose grasp of potential upset

November 21, 2012

SAGINAW – Granbury coach Scotty Pugh said there would be no celebrating simply making the playoffs this season.

He said should the Pirates lose, there would be disappointment and tears shed.

Indeed there was following Friday’s 34-10 Class 4A bidistrict loss to Crowley at Chisholm Trail High School.

But amid the tears and disappointment was optimism. They haven’t learned how to advance in the postseason, it was within their grasp.

The Pirates (7-4) led 10-6 idway through the second quarter after Ryan Suitt connected with Skylar Baskin for a 12-yard touchdown pass.

“I still think we’re in that process of learning how to win,” said Pugh. “We’ve figured it out in the regular season, but the playoffs are much different.

“But you can’t learn from these games unless you’re in them.”

The Eagles (10-1) broke the game open with their speed and agility. They also forced four turnovers, turning two into critical third-quarter touchdown passes by Matt Marner.

Crowley led 13-10 at the half on Larry Cheeks’ 32-yard TD run with just over four minutes left in the second. Then, Cheeks (19 carries, 200 yards) returned the second-half kickoff 43 yards to the Pirates’ 49.

Six plays later Cheeks found the end zone from 9 yards out for a 20-10 lead. From there, the Pirates, who had twice been bailed out by first-half defensive plays – an interception in the end zone by Evan Sledge and a fumble recovery at the 27 by Zach Scott – were simply overwhelmed.

“We felt really good at halftime,” said Pugh. “That second half kickoff set the tone for the rest of the game.”

Crowley’s Kaylon Wilson, who had both interceptions and one of the fumble recoveries, praised the Pirates.

“We knew unless we played better in the second half they just might beat us,” he said.
