The weekend began in perfect fashion for the Granbury Pirates baseball team as they won their first three games in the North Texas Rotational Tournament.

The tournament featured baseball games at three different sites. Azle, Mineral Wells and White Settlement Brewer were all host sites for the tourney.

In the first game at Azle, the Pirates defeated Graham 11-6. That was followed by a pair of wins at Mineral Wells over Eastern Hills (9-1) and the host team Mineral Wells (6-5 in eight innings).

Saturday, the Pirates (5-4) returned to Mineral Wells, but did not have the same success. They dropped a pair of close games, 10-8 to Graham in a rematch and 8-6 to Springtown.

In the win over Eastern Hills, Harrison Campbell and Daniel Stephens combined to pitch a two-hitter.

The loss to Graham was one of the strangest in the tournament. The Pirates were seemingly in control with a 7-0 lead through five innings, then the Steers erupted for 10 runs in the top of the sixth.

Thanks to Granbury errors, not a single run for the Steers was earned in the uneventful inning.

Still, all in all, Granbury coach Brad Hart said the tournament, just as last week’s season-opening tournament at home, was a good experience for his team before it began distict play last night.

“I think this tournament had a lot of positives in it,” said Hart. “I continue to see some guys working on having a good approach at the plate and really trying to be consistant hitters and have quality at bats. Some guys are proving they want to be in the lineup every day. The game is based on hits, so if you aren’t having a good approach and not hitting the baseball you wont find yourself in the lineup.

“I was pleased with the amount of offense we were able to run. We had some good hit-and-runs and safety squeezes, etc, and that is going to matter when we face some of the pitching we will have to face in district.

“As far as pitching goes I thought that (Nathan) Hickey, (Miles) Wagner, and (Payton) Rhodes gave us an excellent chance to win. Wagner threw 94 pitches in eight innings against Mineral Wells, and that is super efficient. It was good for them to see how in the long run being efficient and keeping your pitch count down is going to help them be stronger at the end of the season as opposed to worn out.”

The victory against Mineral Wells was the result of Rhodes coming home on Wagner’s sacrifice fly in the top of the eighth inning.

The Pirates were also very much in the contest against Springtown before giving up three runs late to the Porcupines.

Freshman Tristan Fallin continued the torrid start to his high school career, going 11-for-20 in the tournament with seven doubles, a triple and nine runs batted in.

Fallin has 14 hits this season, including 10 for extra bases. He also has a pair of home runs, both hit against Mansfield Timberview in the Granbury Tournament.

The Pirates began play in District 7-4A last night by hosting Fort Worth South Hills. They are back on the road this weekend for the Austin ISD Tournament, with two games Thursday, one Friday and one Saturday.
