Pirates drop late lead, game at Aledo

ALEDO – As the great Yogi Berra said, Tuesday night was “De ja vu all over again” for the Granbury Pirates.

A year ago the Pirates held a late lead in a game at Aledo, only to see the Bearcats finish with a 19-3 run for a six-point victory.

Tuesday, Granbury led 36-30 with 3:46 to play after Mitchell May hit one of two free throws.

From there, the Bearcats went on an 11-1 run to come away with a 41-37 victory.

The loss dropped the Pirates (6-12 overall) to 1-3 in District 7-4A. They find themselves in a must-win situation as they face Arlington Heights (3-1 in district) today at 3 at Billingsley Field House in Fort Worth.

Aledo (10-9, 4-0), led by former Granbury coach Steve Smith, remained tied for first place in district with Trimble Tech. The teams were playing in Aledo last night for sole possession of the league’s top spot.

Clay Brawner’s free throw with 40 seconds left cut the Pirates’ deficit to 39-37 after a 9-0 Aledo run. Then came an Aledo turnover two seconds later.

The Pirates were unable to capitalize, missing a pair of shots. Luke Bishop hit one of two free throws for Aledo, and J.D. Hohnstreiter grabbed the rebound after the second.

With 25 seconds left, the Pirates had a chance at a 3-pointer, but missed. With a couple seconds to go, Matt Dunn sealed the win with a free throw.

The Pirates have struggled to get to the foul line, but Tuesday they got there 22 times. They made 12, but were 2-for-6 in the final four minutes.

“We competed good, ” said Pirate coach David Breazeale. “I feel like we can move forward from this, but we’ve just got to get a win-any kind of win.”
