Pirate pitching dominant in sweep

March 16, 2013

Miles Wagner was close to perfect Tuesday.

Nathan Hickey was in fine form Thursday.

And the Granbury Pirates were 2-for-2 in District 7-4A during the week.

Wagner pitched a no-hitter, walking just two, in a 13-0 win at O.D. Wyatt. Hickey struck out 15 as the Pirates topped Western Hills 11-5 at Tidwell Field.

“We’ve got the ball team to score runs and pitch well,” said Granbury coach Brad Hart.

Both pitchers got plenty of offensive support as Granbury (9-6, 3-0 in 7-4A) scored 24 runs on 25 hits. They were led by Daniel Arnett, who hit a single, double, triple and home run, was hit by a pitch twice, walked, and drove in four runs in the two games.

It was Arnett’s two-run home run in the bottom of the fifth against Western Hills that put the Pirates up for good, 6-5. It came on the heels of Western Hills (1-2 in district) taking a 5-4 lead in the top of the inning.

“Tristen (Fallin) got that huge hit, and then Daniel crushed it,” said Hart.

“Then, in the sixth, we scored five runs and took them totally out of the game.”

Hickey, along with his pitching performance Thursday, was also a force at the plate with four hits in the two games. this included a pair of doubles and six RBIs.

But it was the pitching that stood out most. Hickey and Wagner each improved to 4-1 to keep Granbury atop the league standings.

“Any time Miles is on the mound he gives us a chance to win, and if he ever figures out how to start hot, he’ll really be dangerous,” said Hart.

“Nathan threw that knuckle curve to one kid today, and the kid had a look on his face like, ‘Are you serious?’ It was nasty.”

The Pirates also had players reach base eight times after getting hit by a pitch in the two games.
