For a 2-2 weekend, Granbury baseball coach Brad Hart was pleased with his team’s performance in the Granbury Classic.

The Pirates opened with wins of 9-7 over Sweetwater and 5-1 over Abilene Cooper, followed by losses of 8-1 to Ranger Junior College junior varsity and 7-6 to Mansfield Timberview.

“We started slow, looked good against Cooper, horrible against Ranger, and came back and gave ourselves a chance to win today,” said Hart after the Timberview loss.

“It was a good tournament.”

The Pirates got some solid hitting performances from the likes of senior Miles Wagner (six hits, three triples) and freshman Tristen Fallin (two home runs, both against Timberview). They also got very strong pitching from junior Nathan Hickey, who tossed a three-hitter with nine strikeouts and a walk against Cooper.

The Pirates were one inning away from defeating Timberview before the Wolves scored twice in the top of the seventh, helped by a Granbury error.

The Pirates had fought back to take a 6-5 lead on Joe Bullock’s RBI single in the bottom of the fifth.

The Pirates scored three runs in the bottom of the fifth to win their opener. The highlight was Harrison Campbell’s double to score the game-winning run.
