Pioneers third in TAPPS track

Continuing a tradition that stood for years when they were known as Happy Hill, the North Central Texas Academy boys track team finished third at the Texas Association of Private and Parochial Schools Class A State Track and Field Meet last weekend,

The Pioneers scored 69 points on the track at Baylor University in Waco, trailing champion Amarillo Ascension with 80 points and Wichita Falls Notre Dame with 72.

Austin Madden led the Pioneers by capturing three gold medals. He won the 400-meter dash with a time of 51.51 seconds, topped the 800-meter run with a 2:04.20, and ran the anchor leg of the 1600 relay that posted a winning time of 3:43.21.

In additiion, Madden finished sixth in the long jump.

Cole Rasco, Cale Dodson and Nahom Newland also ran on the 1600 relay.

“Austin had a great meet. We will miss him,” said NCTA coach Kirby Rasco of the senior runner. “Some of our younger guys got some great experience, and we look for better things next year.”

It is the third consecutive year the Pioneers have won the 1600 relay.

“I am especially proud of our 4×400 relay,” said Rasco. “We hope to do that again next year.”

Jon Durant won the Pioneers’ other two medals, taking second in the 3200 with a 10:47.44 and third in the 1600 with a 4:54.80.

Shelby Lyle won the Lady Pioneers’ only medal, taking third in the shot put with a throw of 27 feet, 6.25 inches.

The Pioneers won Region I, topping both Ascension and Notre Dame.

“The boys had a good meet. Not as good as we were hoping, but did well,” said Rasco.

“We are fairly young and hope to make a run at it again next year.

“Overall it was a good meet. Our girls did well in their events. Shelby did well in the shot and Melissa (Rivera) had been sick all, but ran despite not feeling well.”

In all, 11 boys and two girls competed for NCTA.
