Pioneers steamroll to initial victory

A little bad weather and a sloppy field wasn’t going to stand in the way of the North Central Texas Academy Pioneers winning their first football game of 2013.

The Pioneers navigated their way through the mud in their third road game of the season Friday, rolling past Mineral Wells Community Christian 80-32.

The result left both teams with a 1-2 record. NCTA, which was coming off a bye week, had opened with games at Zephyr and Blum.

NCTA jumped out to a 32-14 lead after just one quarter and took complete control with a 30-6 run in the second quarter to go up 62-20 at the half.

The game was called in the third quarter because of six-man football’s 45-point mercy rule. If a team leads by 45 or more points at the half, or take such a lead at any point in the second half, the game is called.

“We finally got in the win column. The kids played hard on both sides of the ball in muddy conditions,” said NCTA coach Kirby Rasco.

Jared Dodson engineered the Pioneer offense in its scoring outburst. He passed for 251 yards and seven touchdowns. Elias Demissie caught four passes for 75 yards, including three touchdowns, while Tyler Hoskins hauled in two passes for 35 yards and a pair of scores.

Hoskins also led all rushers with 43 yards and a couple of touchdowns.

“Jared had a great game throwing the football,” said Rasco. “Matt Torres gave them fits all night on defense.”

Torres posted seven tackles. Dodson had six tackles and a fumble recovery, and Demissie had five tackles, along with returning a fumble 29 yards for a score.

In all, the Pioneers amassed 310 yards of offense. On defense they recovered four fumbles.

Dodson also returned a kickoff 43 yards for a touchdown.

“We have some work to do on our kicking game,” said Rasco, searching for an area where the Pioneers weren’t dominant.

“But overall, I was pleased with the performance.”

The Pioneers will finally play a home game Friday when they host Lingleville. The Cardinals (2-1) had an unexpected off week this past weekend when their game against Cornerstone was canceled due to a saturated field at Lingleville.

“Our kids are excited to be playing at home,” said Rasco. “It’s going to be nice to not have to travel.

“It’s a big game for us. We’re looking to string some wins together.”

The Pioneers have not lost a game at home since October in 2011.
