Pioneers get first win

December 14, 2013

The North Central Texas Academy Pioneers collected their first basketball victory of the season Tuesday, running past visiting Waxahachie Prep 71-40.

Stefan Rosic led the Pioneers, almost matching Waxahachie point-for-point. He finished with 36 points.

Marvin Ivanovic added 12 points.

NCTA (1-2) jumped out to a 28-8 lead after the first quarter and never looked back.

“Our kids played hard from the start,” said Pioneers coach Kirby Rasco. “We get out to a good start with some pressure and built up a good lead and played well throughout the game.”

Rosic scored 17 points in the first quarter.

The Pioneers only had seven turnovers in the game.

“That is huge for just our third game,” said Rasco.

LADY PIONEERS DROP

THIRD CONSECUTIVE CONTEST

The North Central Texas Academy Lady Pioneers haven’t lost that often in recent seasons, having won three consecutive Texas Association of Private and Parochial Schools Class A state championships.

So when they drop three straight games, it is news.

Stephenville junior varsity handed the Lady Pioneers their third consecutive setback Tuesday, 42-31, dropping them to 5-4.

NCTA also lost a pair of games in the Glen Rose Tournament last weekend before the ice storm that hit the area forced cancellation of that and other tournaments throughout North Texas.

Carolina Bianchi led the Lady Pioneers with 13 points, while Esther Udonsi scored 10.

The second quarter did in the Lady Pioneers. They trailed by just four (17-13) entering the stanza, but the Honeybees outscored them 13-2 for a 30-15 halftime advantage.
