The North Central Texas Academy Pioneers rebounded from their first loss of the season by topping Mineral Wells Community Christian 56-30 Friday.

The Pioneers (7-1) were originally supposed to play Wichita Falls Christ Academy, but that team canceled its season, so a last-minute replacement had to be found.

Josh Torres led NCTA with nine rushes for 129 yards and a pair of touchdowns. He also returned a kickoff 42 yards for a score.

Quarterback Caleb Finley completed all three of his passes for 94 yards and a pair of touchdowns to Cole Rasco (52 yards) and Cale Dodson (30 yards).

Jared Dodson led the defense with 17 tackles, while Daniel Nzeakor had 14 with three sacks.

NCTA was coming off a 64-18 loss at Wichita Falls Notre Dame, the No. 1 team in the state according to Pioneers coach Kirby Rasco, whose squad is ranked sixth, said his team was a little banged up, resulting in quarterback Angel Tercero not suiting up and several starters seeing limited action.

‘It was a total team effort,” said Rasco. “We didn’t do anything fancy, just got out there and blocked and tackled.”
