Five times this season the North Central Texas Academy Pioneers defeated their opponents by six-man football’s 45-point mercy rule.

Friday in Wichita Falls they found themselves on the other end of the mercy rule as they fell to the state’s No. 1 team in TAPPS Six-Man Division II.

Notre Dame defeated the Pioneers 64-18. NCTA entered the game ranked fifth.

The game was the District 2 opener for both teams.

“Notre Dame is a very good football team. We forced them out of their running game early, which was our game plan, but their spread really hurt us,” said NCTA coach Kirby Rasco.

The game was close after the opening quarter, with Notre Dame (5-0 overall) leading 14-6. Then the Knights outscored the Pioneers 50-12 over the next two periods as the game was called in the third quarter.

North Central Texas (6-1 overall) got a 17-for-26 passing performance for 203 yards and a pair of touchdowns from Angel Tercero. Six of those catches and one score went to Elias Fekadu.

“Notre Dame is very big and physical,” said Rasco. “ Our goal is to take cafe of our business and play them again down the road in the playoffs.

“The score was not an indication of the game.”

The game was a stark contrast to last season when Notre Dame won 44-38. Time expired with the Pioneers inches away from scoring.

The Pioneers rebounded from that loss to make it to the state championship game before falling to Fredericksburg Heritage.
