Maypearl comes back to upend Rattlers

March 29, 2014

The Tolar Rattlers had their first District 10-2A baseball victory in their grasp.

Well, before Maypearl came to bat in the bottom of the seventh inning.

The Rattlers took a one-run lead in the top of the inning, but then surrendered two runs in the bottom to fall 5-4.

Lance Smith singled to lead off the seventh, and went to second on Stevie Morphew’s sacrifice bunt. He came home on Dakota Endsley’s single.

Then, Maypearl got a baserunner with a hit batter. He went to second on what was to be a a sacrifice bunt, narrowly missing being thrown out, putting runners on first and second.

“It went downhill from there,” said Tolar coach Darrell Hogan.

Dusty Kimmell led the Tolar offense with a pair of singles, a double, and RBI.

The Rattlers fell despite Smith and Tyler McMillen combining to pitch a three-hitter. Tolar committed five errors.

Despite the loss, dropping them to 0-2 in district (8-5 overall), Hogan said the Rattlers aren’t in a must-win situation. Both of their losses have been to district co-leaders Grandview (14-6 overall) and Maypearl (9-6), both 2-0 in the league. Whitney (8-5, 1-1) and Godley (6-9, 1-1) are a game up on Tolar and Rio Vista (3-11, 0-2).

“No, but in the short district schedule every game is important,” he said. “We have three more games before completing the first half of district so it would be helpful to win those, which are all on the road.”

The Rattlers also open the second half of district at Grandview, making for five straight road contests. If they can survive that grueling test, they have their final four games at home.
