Lipan notches 28th straight win by blasting rival Huckabay

January 29, 2014

Unlike the boys contest Friday that was the latest chapter in a history of thrilling contests among rivals, the Lipan-Huckabay girls game was over by the end of the first quarter as Lipan had a 29-point lead.

Oh, they played the final three quarters, and Lipan, the state’s No. 1 team in Class A Division II, finished with a 90-15 rout of Huckabay.

Shauna Coleman led Lipan (28-1, 7-0 in District 17-A) with 31 points. Kayla Wheeler added 17, and Lanie Roberts had a double-double with 15 points and 13 steals.

Lipan, a winner for a 28th consecutive game, had 32 steals as a team. They forced Huckabay into 41 turnovers.

Lipan blistered the nets from 2-point range, hitting 67 percent (38-of-57). They held Huckabay to 29 percent from 2-point range (6-for-21).

Lipan is closing in on the District 17-A championship. The Lady Indians were hosting Gordon last night and travel to Strawn Friday. Wins in both of those games would clinch.

Last season Lipan shared the district championship with Strawn, splitting their two games with each winning at home. The Lady Indians defeated Strawn, ranked 23rd in the state, 73-51 in Lipan in the first round of district.
