The Lipan Lady Indians moved to within one victory of securing the top seed from District 17-A for the postseason by blasting rival 55-30 in a road contest Friday.
The Lady Indians (25-3 overall) improved to 7-0 in the league and are ranked second in the state by the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches.
Lipan was hosting Gorman last night and hosts Strawn (24-6, 6-1) Friday night. Wins in both of those games would clinch the district championship for the Lady Indians.
Strawn, ranked No. 6 in the state, lost 44-39 at home to Lipan on Jan. 15.
Lanie Roberts dominated play against Huckabay, scoring 31 points. In addition, she delivered six assists and had nine steals.
Lipan outscored Huckabay in each of the first three quarters en route to a 49-19 lead.
Lipan hit 19 of its 36 shots from 2-point range and four of 17 from 3-point land. Huckabay shot just as many 3-pointers (4-for-15) as it did 2-pointera (6-for-15).
Huckabay had more overall rebounds (25-23), but Lipan had twice as many offensive boards (8-4).
Kayla Wheeler of Lipan led all rebounders with seven.
Lipan forced almost twice as many turnovers as the Lady Indians committed (26-14). They also had 19 assists as a team.
The Lady Indians’ losses have all been to teams in larger classifications, Bowie, Merkel (No. 1 in 2A) and Tatum (No. 20 in 2A).
Lipan is seeking a third consecutive trip to state. Last season the Lady Indians reached the state final.
