Lipan boys split four contests

The Lipan Indians came out of the Tenaha Tournament with a pair of wins and a pair of losses this past weekend.

The tournament is considered to be among the toughest in the state.

The Indians opened with an 81-43 loss to two-time defending Class 2A state champion White Oak. They bounced back with a 69-64 win over Avery in double overtime and a 62 53 victory against Campbell before dropping a 69-45 contest to Broaddus in the consolation final.

The Indians trailed Broaddus 45-14 at the half, but fought back to within 54-37 with a 23-9 third-quarter run.

Trevor Hedeman led Lipan by averaging 19.25 points in the tournament, including a 31-point performance against Campbell.

Derrick Cook posted a pair of double-doubles against Avery and Campbell with 11 points and 10 rebounds in each game.

Lance Ferguson hit six of Lipan’s 15 shots from 3-point range in the tournament. They finished 15-for-56 from long distance (27 percent).

In defeating Avery, the Indians let six-point lead slip away in the final quarter. Then, after the teams each scored seven points in the first extra period, Lipan’s defense clamped down to hold Avery to three points.

Joel Rice led the way with 19 points.

In defeating Campbell, the Indians used a 14-7 second-quarter run to take command.
