Late shot lifts Lipan by J’boro
It’s not how much you lead by or even how often you hold the lead in a sporting event – as long as your team has the lead when the final buzzer sounds.
The Lipan Indians proved this theory Wednesday with a thrilling 45-44 victory against Jacksboro at the Indians’ home gym.
Lipan (8-11) never led in the contest until Kyle Mercer’s 3-point shot went in with a half second remaining in the game.
“It was a very clutch shot by a freshman,” said Lipan coach Cody Chandler. “We just didn’t give up. We just kept fighting and battling and gave ourselves a chance at the end.”
The Indians entered the final quarter down 34-23.
Lipan tied the game at 42 in the closing seconds, but it appeared that Jacksboro might escape after regaining the lead, 44-42. Then, Mercer came through.
