The Tolar volleyball squad displayed some of what goes into a winning formula in their season opener Tuesday against visiting De Leon, but the Lady Rattlers still came up a little short.

De Leon posted a 18-25, 25-16, 25-16, 25-21 victory.

“We played with great intensity and effort,” said Scotty Miller, who is in his first season coaching the volleyball team. “(There were) lots of long rallies, (We) just did not serve well enough to win.

“We really needed someone to put the ball on the floor at times, but our hitters were struggling a bit. As a coach, I learned a lot about the team and each time we take the court we will improve.”

Before taking the Tolar job, Miller led Evant to the Class A regionals twice in a four-year span (2009-12). He is also the pole vault coach for Tolar, helping Reagan Mabery and Rodi Brister reach the 2A State Meet last season.

Madeline Dawson and Madison Prichard-Warren led Tolar at the net with six kills each, most set up by Reagan Mabery with 13 assists. Prichard-Warren also led the defense with 13 digs.

The Lady Rattlers were scheduled to play last night at home against Clifton.

Tolar is seeking its first playoff berth since moving to the 2A level in 2010. The program played its first varsity season in 2006, and in 2007 reached the second round of the Class A playoffs, followed by back-to-back third-round berths.
