The Tolar Lady Rattlers overcame an early four-run deficit to run away from the Lady Bullfrogs in a 19-8 softball victory Friday at Lake Worth.
The Lady Rattlers (4-6) pounded out 24 hits, including four each from haley Webb and Katie Keith. Carson King, Tatum Newton, Caitlyn Hall and Kayla Bonnell had three each.
The Lady Rattlers fell behind 4-0 after the first inning, but came right back with eight runs of their own in the top of the second and six in the third for a 14-8 advantage.
“The girls have been working hard all week in practice and it paid off tonight,” said head coach Christy Collie.
“They were disciplined at the plate and aggressive on the bases, taking extra bases, pressing the defense.
“Two of our starters were not here due to a track meet, so I hae to move players around to positions they don’t play much. Carson King played a solid shortstop, and freshman Kailee Brock held her own on second.”
In the first two innings, Lake Worth capitalized on bloopers that dropped up the middle for base hits.
“Tatum Newton did her job on the mound getting ground balls, they were just falling in the holes,” said Collie.
Staci Ashley came on in the third and held Lake Worth to a single run over the final four innings, including none in the final three. The game was called after six innings due to the 10-run mercy rule.
Collie said the timing of the victory is also important. The Lady Rattlers begin play in District 10-2A soon.
“The win going into district is a good jump start. We have had some tough competition and have lost some close games. The girls are approaching district with a healthy confidence.”
