The Tolar girls got 19 points from Shelby Nunley as they rolled to a 54-42 District 10-2A basketball triumph at home Tuesday night over Rio Vista, giving the Lady Rattlers continued hope in possibly securing a playoff berth.
The Lady Rattlers (12-11, 5-6 in district) are now a half game ahead of Keene (4-6 in district) in the battle for the fourth and final playoff seed. Tolar was scheduled to close the regular season last night against first-place Grandview. Keene still has two district games left, against last-place Rio Vista and Grandview.
If Tolar won last night and Keene loses one of its remaining two, the Lady Rattlers are in the playoffs. If Tolar lost and Keene loses twice, the Lady Rattlers are still in.
If Tolar and Keene finish tied, they would hold a one-game playoff to break the tie as they split their district meetings. Each team won on the other’s court.
“(This was a) good win for us,” Tolar coach Benita Carlton said. “We played well defensively, and executed our offense. We’ve given ourselves a chance for our playoff hopes.”
The Lady Rattlers were without starter Hannah Peregrino, a standout who suffered a foot injury last Friday in Tolar’s game at Maypearl. Carlton said that despite having cracked the foot in two places, she has been released by a doctor to play Friday using a brace.
Michaela Phillips added nine points for the Lady Rattlers. Nunley’s total included four buckets from 3-point range.
Meredith Caudle and Phillips led the team in rebounds with five each, and Marlee Thomas recorded a team-high four assists. Caudle also had four steals.
Tolar, which shot 28 percent from the field overall (13-of-46) built a 30-16 lead by intermission. The Lady Rattlers held on despite being outscored by the Lady Eagles 16-11 in the final quarter.
