Lady Pirates win, lose

January 1, 2014

Just a couple days after going on the road for a 73-63 victory at Fort Worth Dunbar, the Granbury Lady Pirates struggled offensively in a 39-35 home loss to Burleson Monday.

Amber Strange (15 points, 10 rebounds) and Bryce Frank (11 points, 10 rebounds) each posted a double-double in the win over Dunbar.

Against Burleson, Morgan Northcutt led with 22 points.

In the loss, the Lady Pirates (11-7) were 13-for-37 from the field, including 4-for-17 from 3-point range. They held the Lady Elks to 10-for-35 shooting and also 4-for-17 on treys.

But free throws were a major factor. Burleson hit 15 of 19 and Granbury was 5-for-10.

“I think Burleson has a very balanced team, quick kids, and they were pretty deadly from the free throw line,” said Lady Pirate coach Leta Andrews.

“Their defense hurt us. We could never see the open post.”

With the score tied at 35 with 1:37 to play, Burleson’s Lindsey Bryan hit one of two free throws. Then, with 43 seconds left, the Lady Pirates missed the front end of a 1-and-1 that would have tied the game.

Burleson’s Kaley Baker got the rebound, hit a free throw. After Granbury missed an attempt to tie, Bryan was fouled and hit both free throws to ice the win.

Getting points from five different players, Granbury used a 14-0 run to take a 24-17 lead in the third quarter. Burleson countered with a 15-7 run.
