Lady Pirates warm up for trip with home win

PUTTING ONE AWAY: Amber Strange of the Granbury Lady Pirates prepares to put away a kill during a five-game opening match victory against Mansfield Lake Ridge Monday.

The Granbury Lady Pirates bid aloha to a new volleyball season Monday with a thrilling win over Mansfield Lake Ridge at the James Wann Sports Center, 25-23, 16-25, 25-14, 22-25, 15-6. “They brought a very solid team here tonight to play ball,’ said Lady Pirate head coach Tammy Clark of Lake Ridge. “Being a new school, I am impressed with how good they are.” Lake Ridge is about to start its second year of school. However, in many ways the Lady Eagles played like veterans Monday. The first four games of the match were virtually even, with a pair of thrillers and a pair of blowouts (one for each team). But in the fifth game, Granbury took command with an 8-0 charge, mostly behind the serving of freshman Amber Strange. A kill by sophomore Karis Beasley tied the game and brought Strange up to the service line. She then served seven consecutive points, aided by kills from sophomore Taylor DeYoung, senior Sydney Carpenter and another from Beasley, along with a block from Carpenter. “We talked between games about getting the momentum early and keeping it in that fifth game,” said Clark. The Lady Pirates are in Hawaii this weekend for the Maui Invitational. When they last went to a tournament in Hawaii, they returned and had the best season in school history, finishing 32-13 (14-0 in district) in 2010.
