Lady Pirates take second – again – in Abilene

The Granbury Lady Pirates have had success in the always tough West Texas Shootout in recent years.

However, they’ve not brought home the championship trophy of the prestigious soccer tournament.

They have, however, finished second for a third consecutive season, falling 2-1 to Abilene Wylie in the title match.

The Lady Pirates (3-1) reached the championship contest with three consecutive shutouts, 1-0 over Abilene Cooper, 2-0 over Pampa, and 2-0 over Brownwood.

“Great Tournament. Great competition,” said Lady Pirate coach David Winkleman.

In the final, Wylie scored on a penalty kick for a 1-0 halftime lead. Then, they added what turned out to be the game winner early in the second half.

Marissa Baird’s goal, with an assist from Maggie McKenna, cut the Lady Pirates’ deficit in half, but they could not find the net again.

BreAnne Daly, Hannah Hiler and Kelci Slaughter were named all-tournament for the Lady Pirates.

“Wylie is good,” said Winkleman. “I thought throughout the tournament our back line of Lydia (Rife), Marissa (Baird) and BreAnne (Daly) played awesome. Really strong.

“Our center midfield was really awesome as well with Hannah Hiler and Kelci (Slaughter), with Ariel (Davila) coming off the bench, Hannah Phillips and Emma McElvain played well outside.

“We’re getting lots of opportunities and finishing off a variety of players. Proud of them.”

Pirates tie two

The Granbury Pirates went 0-1-2 in pool play in the West Texas Shootout. However, they did not score enough goals to advance to bracket play.

Granbury tied San Angelo Lake View 1-1 in the tourney opener, and Abilene 1-1 in their final contest, along with dropping a 4-1 contest to Brownwood sandwiched in between.

“We mentally were not ready,” said Pirate coach Doug Kissinger.

“Up to this tournament we only had one scrimmage. Our others were canceled (because of weather). We made plenty of mistakes and were riddled with injuries.

“All in all, we have to do better as a TEAM. We look to bounce back this weekend (in the Aledo Tournament).”

Bryce Gentry was named all-tournament for the Pirates.
