Lady Pirates struggle with another 1-0 loss

The Granbury Lady Pirates’ quest for a third straight district title has turned into a quest for a first district win.

Stephenville dropped the Lady Pirates to 0-3 in District 15-4A Tuesday (6-11-1 overall) with a 1-0 win at Pirate Stadium.

It was the eighth consecutive loss for the Lady Pirates, who are oh so close to being 2-1 in district with back-to-back 1-0 losses.

“A player came out of the midfield and got loose,” said Granbury coach David Winkleman of the lone Honeybees goal, which was scored with 20 minutes left in the game.

“We’re playing hard. I’m just not sure we’re playing smart. We just need to score.”

Winkleman had praise for a number of his players in the loss, starting with goalkeeper Kim Bantz.

“Kim had a good game, and so did the defense,” he said.

“Lily (Middleton), Aubrey (Caudle), Kelci (Slaughter), they didn’t give up much, and Kim made some good stops.”

He also said the return of Hannah Hiler has been a plus. She missed the first 16 games with an injury.
