It wasn’t the dominant performance of their first three district victories, but the Granbury Lady Pirates softball team remained perfect in league play nonetheless, winning 5-3 at Fort Worth Trimble Tech Monday.

The Lady Pirates (8-10 overall) improved to 4-0 in District 7-4A. They share first place with Aledo (19-3, 4-0), the No. 4 team in the state according to the Texas Girls Coaches Association. Granbury hosts Aledo next Friday.

Against Tech, the Lady Pirates dominated statistics, outhitting the Lady Bulldogs 15-5. However, with runners on base, Granbury often hit the ball directly at Tech fielders to thwart their own scoring threats.

“We hit four or five line drives where the outfielder didn’t even have to take a step,” said Lady Pirate coach Chad Kimberling.

“I can’t fault the girls, they hit the ball, it’s just that a lot of them were right at people.”

Bailey Cole continued her torrid play at the plate, going 3-for-4, while Maci Samuels and Destini Lopez each had a pair of doubles.

Kimberling said high fences about 18 feet tall at Tech kept some of the hits from being home runs.

“If Maci hits that ball in our own field, for example, that’s a triple or home run,” he said.

Lopez also got the pitching victory, going all seven innings and striking out eight. She walked seven, most after being called for an illegal pitching move early in the game.

“There was a hole behind the mound, and her heel was going in it,” said Kimberling. “Her foot was on the rubber, but that played with her mentally, I think.”

Lopez had already thrown a no-hitter and one-hitter in a pair of previous district outings.

Tech scored all three of its runs in the bottom of the seventh, thanks largely to a pair of walks and a double.

The Lady Pirates are off until they host South Hills Tuesday.

“We’ve played 30 or 31 games if you count scrimmages and pool play in tournaments,” said Kimberling. “We’re taking the week off, coming back and hitting it hard on Monday.”
