The Granbury Lady Pirates finished second as a team, while Lauren Hammonds brought home the top individual prize from the Thrill of the Hill cross country meet in Stephenville Wednesday.
Hammonds ran the 3.1-mile course in 20 minutes and 53 seconds. She was one of two Lady Pirates to finish in the top five as Rachael Perriello clocked a 21:05 to place fourth.
Saginaw won the meet, named so because of its hilly terrain.
“The course had two big hills, some muddy spots, but I am very proud of where we are sitting one week from district,” said Ward.
The Lady Pirates and Pirates will compete in the District 7-4A Meet next Saturday at the Tarrant County Resource Connection, off Interstate 20, east of Fort Worth. Granbury has qualified runners for the regional meet in each of Ward’s 10 previous seasons as head coach.
All five Lady Pirate runners posted top-25 finishes in Stephenville.
The Granbury boys were led by Andew Reid, who was 21st overall. He posted a time of 18:03.
Dylan Goosen came in 23rd, running an 18:09.
“We had several out for the PSAT (college entrance test) today, but out of our 30 runners (varsity and JV), 18 of them PR’d (personal record) today,” said Ward.
“The kids are learning to push past their comfort zone and are improving at each meet.”
The Pirates and Lady Pirates will run in a district warmup meet Monday, at the same site as the district meet.
The top three teams and the top 10 individual finishers advance to regional competition Nov. 2 in Lubbock.
