WHITE SETTLEMENT – Hannah Hiler said she knew the minute she and the Granbury Lady Pirates would be moving on to the third round of the Class 4A volleyball playoffs.

It came late in the third game Thursday against Boswell.

“When it was 22-22, we looked at Coach (Tammy) Clark and she said, ‘We’ve got this,’” said Hiler.

And indeed the Lady Pirates did, going on to finish the match and winning 25-19, 25-19, 18-25, 25-22 at Brewer High School Gym.

The victory sends the Lady Pirates (39-5) into the Region I quarterfinals Tuesday against Trophy Club Nelson (26-17). The match will be played at Chisholm Trail High School, with the time to be announced sometime over the weekend.

Granbury entered Tuesday ranked sixth in the state, while Boswell was No. 13.

Boswell (36-6) appeared to set to force a fifth game when the Lady Pioneers used an 18-6 run to go up 20-16. Then, a key player rotated away from the net at the same time Clark made a substitution.

Erin Jones came off the bench and provided a spark, along with a clutch kill that closed the deficit to 20-19. Three points later, Amber Strange and Aubrey Ezell had kills and Sydney Carpenter had a block and the Lady Pirates were back up 22-21.

“We got a first ball sideout,” said Clark. “One of their stronger players came off the front row, giving us a chance to be the stronger team up front.”

Each of the first two games were back-and-forth through the first 30 points before the Lady Pirates went on late game runs in each to pull away. Granbury broke a 15-15 tie in the first game with a 10-4 finish, including scoring the final four points. They ended the second game with a 9-4 run.

In Game 3, however, it was the Lady Pioneers who had the late burst for the victory. Granbury closed to within 19-18 on a kill by Ezell, but Boswell countered with a 6-0 finish.

Granbury appeared to be in command from the outset of the fourth game. The Lady Pirates scored the first four points and built a 10-2 advantage.

Boswell bounced back behind the serving of Lindsey McCauley and Kajohna Davis, and suddenly the match was tied at 12.

The Lady Pirates kept regaining the lead as the teams exchanged the next few points. Then, McCauley came around to serve again during a 5-0 run by the Lady Pioneers.

Karis Beasley led the Granbury offense with 14 kills, along with topping the defense with 31 digs. Ezell also posted a double-double (12 kills, 17 digs).

The Lady Pirates had little difficulty getting through bidistrict for a fifth straight year, sweeping Burleson Centennial 25-16, 25-13, 25-10 Tuesday in Glen Rose.

The Lady Pirates controlled the match from the outset, especially at the service line. They served 14 aces, including seven by Beasley.

“Karis has definitely been putting on the heat. She’s been working on that hard. driving serve,” said Clark.

“Serving’s a momentum changer,” said Lady Pirate Shelby Shade. “Having a strong serve in the beginning opened it up.”

The Lady Pirates used a 7-0 run in the first game to open up a 20-10 advantage. In the second game they scored the first five points and steadily built their advantage to the final dozen points.

An 8-0 run in the third game opened up a 13-4 lead, which they continued increase.

Along with a chance to move to move past the third round for the first time in school history, Lady Pirate Breanna Crain has a chance to set a school record Tuesday. She enters the match with 654 defensive digs, 31 shy of breaking the mark set by Sierra Smith in the 2011 season.

Crain has 43 digs in the two postseason matches. That’s more than a fourth of the team’s total 0f 157.
