The Granbury Lady Pirates got a much-needed victory at home Tuesday, coming from behind to top Fort Worth Western Hills 10-6 in a District 7-4A contest.
With the win, the Lady Pirates (10-5 overall) moved into sole possession of third place in District 7-4A with a 5-2 league record. They trail Aledo (7-0) and South Hills (6-1), to whom their two losses have come. Western Hills (4-3 in district) is fourth at the league’s midway mark.
The top four teams at season’s end advance to the playoffs.
Western Hills overcame a 4-2 deficit to go up 5-4 in the top of the fifth with three runs. The Lady Pirates came back to tie it in the bottom of the same inning, and took command with five runs in the sixth.
Maci Samuelson and Taelyn Beadle each had two hits for the Lady Pirates. Kristen Money hit a solo home run, walked twice and stole two bases, and Alyssia Allen tripled along with getting hit by a pitch.
The Lady Pirates stole five bases as a team.
Destini Lopez was the winning pitcher, tossing the final two and a third innings.
“I am very proud of how the girls fought back tonight,” said first-year Granbury coach Mallory Smith. “It was a great win going into Round 2 of district. We just need to keep moving forward and building from here.”
Granbury reached the postseason as the No. 3 seed last season behind Aledo and Western Hills, and is hoping to move up in the second half.
The Lady Pirates had dropped two straight before Tuesday, 2-1 to South Hills despite outhitting the Lady Scorpions 6-1, and 10-0 to Aledo. In their five district victories, the Lady Pirates have outscored their opponents 89-12.
