Lady Pirates clinch playoffs, have sights on title

January 26, 2013

The Granbury Lady Pirates are headed back to the basketball playoffs.

But they want more.

Granbury clinched a postseason spot Tuesday with a 54-38 win over Fort Worth Western Hills at Billingsley Field House.

They want a district championship, their first since the 2003-03 season. The win left the Lady Pirates (18-11 overall) in a three-way tie for first place in District 7-4A with Aledo and Fort Worth Trimble Tech.

“This is the first step, and that’s good that we got in, but this team is capable of so much more,” said Lady Pirate coach Leta Andrews.

“They know they can win district.”

The Lady Pirates got 31 points and 10 rebounds from 6-4 all-state post and University of Texas signee Lilley Vander Zee. She was also 9-for-10 at the free throw line.

“Lilley was great tonight, and if she keeps doing that, there’s no question we can win district,” said Andrews.

The game was close after one quarter, with Granbury up 13-12. Then the Lady Pirates took control with a 21-9 second-quarter run and maintained a safe distance.

Still, Andrews said the game was not a pretty win.

“They made us play ugly and do things you don’t want to see, but it’s just something you have to deal with,” she said.

“They (Western Hills) are so erratic. It’s hard to play good basketball against them.

“They do have some talent, though. They have three girls who are really nice. They are quick, and they anticipate well.”

In the end, though, Western Hills (7-22, 3-7) simply did not have enough talent to keep up with Granbury.

The Lady Pirates’ quest for a district crown enters its most challenging stage next week. They are on the road to face Trimble Tech Monday and travel to Aledo Friday.

The Lady Pirates defeated Trimble Tech 51-49 when the teams met in Granbury on Jan. 4 and lost 46-40 to Aledo in Granbury on Jan. 8.
