The greatest start to a volleyball season in Granbury High history continued Saturday with another first.

For the first time in her 11 years as coach, Tammy Clark’s Lady Pirates are now the champions of their own tournament.

The Lady Pirates accomplished the feat with a come-from-behind 17-25, 25-23, 25-22 victory against Trinity at the James Wann Sports Center.

“It’s really very fantastic to win your own tournament,” said an ecstatic Clark. “We knew we had some fierce competition coming in.”

The Lady Pirates improved to 17-0, something no other Granbury volleyball team has ever done. It was also their second tournament championship of the season, having captured the title of the Maui Invitational the season before.

The Lady Pirates ran through their pool with little difficulty, sweeping Chisholm Trail, Lubbock and Kennedale. Paschal forced Granbury to three games, 25-13, 22-25, 25-12.

In the Gold Bracket, Granbury again swept its first two foes, Mansfield Summit 25-20, 25-21, and Burleson 25-21, 27-25.

“We’ve been really close before, and this year we did it,” said Aubrey Ezell, who was named all-tournament along with Breanna Crain.

“We’re really happy to be the first team to win this for Coach Clark.

“Of all teams, Trinity, our best friends.”

The Lady Pirates and the Trinity players have developed a special friendship over the years through the head coaches being good friends and by playing in each other’s tournaments each season.
