Led by four top-20 individual finishes, the Granbury Lady Pirates got the 2013 cross country season off to a good start with a second-place team finish at the Fossil Ridge Meet Friday.
Lauren Hammonds led all Granbury varsity runners, finishing fourth out of 64 competitors over the 3.1-mile course with a time of 22 minutes and 46 seconds. Emma Thomas finished 10th, clocking 23:22.
Helena Linzy placed 16th, posting a 23:58, and Rachael Perriello’s 24:13 was 18th.
“The girls varsity team looked very strong, with some freshman and sophomore girls really stepping up,” said coach Amber Ward. “They are young, but show a lot of running maturity and will continue to improve.
“I believe JV and varsity will be very competitive.”
The boys were led by Andrew Reid, who finished 38th out of 103 overall in the field. He had a time of 19:58. Hayden Coppenbarger was 45th with a 20:33.
It was the first time in his career that Reid broke the 20-minute barrier.
