Having yet to lose to a team in their own classification this season, the Lipan Lady Indians figured to get their toughest test Tuesday night in Strawn.
The Lady Indians passed, coming home with a 44-39 victory in the District 17-A clash of top-10 teams.
The Lady Indians (22-3, 4-0 in district) are ranked No. 2 in the state. The Lady Greyhounds (21-6, 3-1) are No. 6.
“It was a good game, and I thought it would be,” said Lipan coach Amber Branson. “It was exciting.”
The Lady Indians led throughout and took a 12-point lead (39-27) into the final quarter. The Lady Greyhounds rallied, but not quite enough.
“It looked like we could pull away, but they hit some shots and we threw it away some,” said Branson.
“In the end, though, they just couldn’t come back enough.”
Lipan was led by Shauna Coleman with 17 points, eight rebounds and five blocked shots. Lanie Roberts posted a double-double with 12 points and 15 rebounds.
The Lady Indians dominated rebounds by a 41-25 margin, especially offensive rebounds (24-8).
“We really went to the boards,” said Branson. “I think we got seven shots in one possession.”
The Lady Indians actually had an overall lower shooting percentage (27 percent) than did the Lady Greyhounds (35 percent), and each team made four 3-pointers. However, the difference was Lipan made one more 2-pointer and had an 8-5 advantage at the free throw line.
The teams were also almost even in turnovers, with Lipan committing 22 and Strawn 24. Lipan had nearly twice as many steals, however (15-8).
Lipan wrapped up the first half of district last night by hosting Gordon. They will face Strawn in a rematch when the Lady Greyhounds come to Lipan Feb. 1.
