Led by district champion Lanie Roberts, the Lipan Lady Indians qualified for cross country regionals as a team with a second-place finish in the District 16-A Meet at Goldthwaite Monday.
Lipan scored 57 points. Zephyr won with 20.
“The girls ran really well,” said Lipan coach Ray Michou. “We had to have good performances to edge out Priddy (third place with 67 points). However, Zephyr was just too strong today. We look forward to competing against them at regionals.”
The Region II Meet is Nov. 3 at Vandergriff Park in Arlington.
Roberts clocked a time of 13:15 over the 2-mile course to take the top spot. Shelby Bontke of Lipan took ninth with a 14:39.
“Lanie ran another fine race. She has been strong all year,” said Michou. “Shelby seems to be doing better each week and is running her best.”
Roberts and Bontke are freshmen, as is Catherine Thormann, who placed 18th with a time of 15:44.
“Each of these three has been very competitive week-in and week-out,” said Michou.
Shauna Coleman finished 14th with a 15:25, Rhiana Michou was 15th with a season-best 15:27, and Kristen Drewry took 28th in 16:30.
“Kristen’s times have consistently improved, and she also is peaking at the right time,” said Michou. “And I can’t say enough about what Rhiana and Shauna have meant to our team. They have been the heart and soul of our group. Our younger runners have been blessed to have them as leaders.”
For the Lipan boys, Jace Walker placed 22nd with a clocking of 22:53 over 3.1 miles, Kyle Mercer was 29th in 26:08, and Tanden Foust had a season-best posting of 26:38 for 31st.
