Lady Indians’ run raising roof

MANSFIELD – Talk to just about anyone who’s seen the Lipan Lady Indians play a basketball game and they will agree.

Unless the roof caves in, they will be walking off the court at the University of Texas’ Frank Erwin Center in Austin holding the Class A Division II state championship trophy.

But then, as the Lady Indians remember, a lot of folks thought that last season when they got upset by Coolidge in the third round of the playoffs.

The same round in which Lipan (34-1), ranked No. 1 in the state, demolished No. 7 Frost (25-3) 69-35 Tuesday night at Mansfield High School.

“We’re pretty wary of roofs right now,” said Lipan assistant coach Ray Michou after the win.

“I still have a bitter taste in my mouth from last year,” said Lipan coach Amber Branson. “I remember sitting in the restaurant after getting calls from people who couldn’t believe we lost.

“Tonight we were more focused and ready to get this behind us.”

The victory moved the Lady Indians, who are seeking a third state tournament berth in four years, into the Region III semifinals yesterday against Yantis (22-10) at Tyler Junior College.

“Last year taught us a lesson,” said sophomore Lanie Roberts. “We always need to play our hardest no matter what.

“Last year showed us anything can happen.”

The Lady Indians forced 13 turnovers in the first quarter to establish their dominance.

“He (Frost coach) called three timeouts in the first quarter and four in the first half. I’ve never seen that before,” said Branson.
