Lady Indians open second half of district with rout

January 26, 2013

The Lipan Lady Indians began the second half of play in District 17-A the same way they ended the first half – in dominating fashion with a 70-27 victory against visiting Lingleville Tuesday.

Lipan (24-3, 6-0 in 17-A) raced to a 36-7 halftime lead and was never threatened.

Lanie Roberts led Lipan with 25 points, eight rebounds, six assists and seven steals. She was nicely complemented by Kayla Wheeler, who finished with 21 points, six rebounds and four steals.

The Lady Indians controlled every phase of the game. They shot 44 percent from 2-point range (24-for-55), 35 percent from 3-point range (6-17), and hit four of six foul shots. Lingleville hit just 10 of 33 2-pointers (30 percent), two of 14 treys (14 percent) and one of four free throws.

The Lady Indians also forced 29 turnovers, nearly twice as many as their own 15. Lipan’s steals triple those of Lingleville (21-7).

The Lady Indians, ranked second in the state in Class A Division II by the Texas Association of Basketball coaches and Texas Girls Coaches Association, hosts Strawn next Friday in a game that could decide the district championship.

The Lady Greyhounds (23-6, 5-1) are ranked sixth by the TABC and 10th by the TGCA. Lipan won the first meeting in Strawn 44-39, holding off a fourth-quarter rally.
