The Lipan Lady Indians made short work of Lingleville in the District 17-A opener for both teams Friday night in Lipan.
The Lady Indians, in improving to 19-3 overall, dominated in every phase of the contest. They roared out to a 35-4 halftime advantage, and things got no better for the visitors in the second half.
The Lady Indians are ranked second in the state in Class A Division II by the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches. They are third in the Texas Girls Coaches Association rankings.
Lipan is seeking a third consecutive appearance in the state tournament. Last season the Lady Indians made the school’s first appearance in the championship game, falling to Neches, which won its third consecutive state title.
The year before Neches ousted Lipan in the state semifinals.
Lane Roberts led Lipan against Lingleville, scoring 26 points. She was also the Lady Indians’ top defender as she collected 10 of their 23 steals for a double-double.
In addition, Roberts grabbed six rebounds (five offensive) and dished out five assists.
Shauna Coleman also posted a double-double for Lipan. Along with the 21 points she scored, she pulled down 10 rebounds. To top off her night, she had six blocks and four steals on defense.
The Lady Indians shot 49 percent from 2-point range (21-for-43) and hit seven of 25 from 3-point range (28 percent). They were also on fire at the free throw line, hitting 15 of the 18 attempts they put up.
In contrast, Lingleville mustered just 21 percent shooting from 2-point range (6-for-28) and was held to a meager 1-for-10 from 3-point territory.
Lipan had a commanding 44-20 rebound advantage as all players who saw action scored and pulled down a board. Nineteen of the rebounds were on the offensive side, compared to six offensive boards by Lingleville.
Seven Lipan players shared the team’s 18 assists and their 23 steals. The Lady Indians also blocked eight shots and forced 35 turnovers.
Lingleville managed just four steals.
